- PRE-OPEN REPORT: The headline index is tipped to open around twenty points lower this morning, according to financial websites, as investors fret over weak US economy, ahead of a busy blue chip earnings day.


In the US last night, the Dow fell 61 points to 15,619, the Nasdaq dropped 21 points to 3,931 and the S&P500 lost 9 points at 1,763.

In Asia today, the Nikkei was recently down 55 points at 14,448 and the Hang Seng off 143 points at 23,160.

WTI crude oil traded at $96.77 a barrel and Brent crude at $109.86.

Gold settled at $1,349 an ounce.


In the corporate diary today, interim results are due from Antofagasta, Avocet Mining, AstraZeneca, BG Group, BT Group, First Quantum Minerals, Hillshire Brands Company, Royal Dutch Shell and Smith & Nephew.

Trading statements are expected from Afren, COLT Telecom Group, Countrywide, Henderson Group and Premier Foods.

Angle, Forte Energy, Genesis Emerging Markets Fund, Pochin's and Seeing Machines host their AGMs.
