In the US last night, the Dow gained 226 points to 17,417, while the Nasdaq added 45 points to close at 4,683 and the S&P 500 edged 19 points higher to 2,021.

In Asia today, the Nikkei was recently up 133 points at 17,739 and the Hang Seng had gained 11 points at 24,607.

WTI crude oil traded at $44.67 a barrel and Brent at $49.05.

Gold settled at $1,260.9 an ounce.

LONDON MARKETS

In the corporate diary today, interim results are due from BT Group and trading statements are expected from KCOM Group and Vedanta Resources.

Elsewhere, Patisserie Holdings, Caledonian Trust, Henderson European Focus Trust, Nord Gold, The Scottish Investment Trust, Schroder UK Mid & Small Cap Fund, Sefton Resources and Treatt host their AGMs.
